ilkley is a town and civil parish in West Yorkshire, England. historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Ilkley civil parish includes the adjacent village of Ben Rhydding and is trading regionally as an upmarket tourist destination and residential area. The town is just north of the River Wharfe and about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Leeds. The town and civil parish had a population of 14,495 at the time of the 2011 census.
Ilkley’s spa town heritage and surrounding countryside make it a popular destination for tourists. The town also has an active cultural life and is home to many clubs and societies. Professional teams include Ilkley Rugby Club, who compete in National League 3 North, and Ilkley Town FC, who play in the West Yorkshire Association Football League.
The town takes its name from the River Wharfe, which flows through the town, and the Old English noun ile, meaning “river bend”. The name was first recorded in written form as Ilklea in 1155.
The town’s history dates back to at least the early 12th century, when it was mentioned in a deed by empress Matilda as a property of the Cluniac monastery of Pontefract. In the 13th century it was granted a charter by King Henry III, making it a free borough governed by a guild merchant. By the 16th centuryIlkley had become an important market town and centre for the woollen trade.
The parish church of All Saints dates from the 12th century and is a grade I listed building. The churchyard contains the war graves of four service personnel of World War I and 24 of World War II.
Ilkley Manor House, a grade II* listed building, is believed to date from the 13th century. It was the ancestral home of the Currer family, one of whom, Ellis Bell, wrote under the pen name Charlotte Brontë.
In 1847, Yarburgh Mill, a corn mill, was converted into a woollen mill by Christopher Stansfield. In 1864 the mill was bought by Timothy Taylor and operated as a flax mill until 1885, when it was converted back to a woollen mill. The business prospered and in 1887 a second mill was built alongside the original. By 1900 the company employed 400 people and had started to export its products worldwide. The mills continued to operate until 1986, when they were finally closed.
