The village grew steadily throughout the late 1700s and early 1800s. In 1828, the Erie Canal was completed, connecting Ilion to the rest of the country. This resulted in a boom in trade and industry, as Ilion became a major stop on the canal.
The mid19th century saw the rise of several important industries in Ilion. In 1853, the Remington Arms Company was founded in the village. The company produced the first commercially successful repeating rifle, known as the “Volcanic,” which was used in the American Civil War.
