History of Ilion

The Village of Ilion is a vibrant community located in the heart of Central New York. The village is situated on the Mohawk River, just south of the Adirondack foothills. It is noteworthy for its rich history and role in the development of the American industrial revolution.

The first settlers of Ilion were primarily of Dutch and German descent who arrived in the early 1700s. The village was originally known as Unadilla, meaning “meeting place” in the Mohawk language. In 1788, the village was renamed “Ilion” after the Greek city of Troy.

The village grew steadily throughout the late 1700s and early 1800s. In 1828, the Erie Canal was completed, connecting Ilion to the rest of the country. This resulted in a boom in trade and industry, as Ilion became a major stop on the canal.

The mid19th century saw the rise of several important industries in Ilion. In 1853, the Remington Arms Company was founded in the village. The company produced the first commercially successful repeating rifle, known as the “Volcanic,” which was used in the American Civil War. In 1869, the company completed construction of a large factory on the banks of the Mohawk River.

Ilion was also home to the American Fork and Hoe Company, which was founded in 1867. The company produced a variety of farm implements, as well as the first successful steel hoe.

In the early 20th century, Ilion began to take on a more modern appearance. The Erie Canal was replaced by the New York State Barge Canal, and several new factories and businesses were established.

The village continued to prosper throughout the mid20th century. In the 1950s, the Ilion School District was created, consolidating the village’s three separate school districts.

Today, Ilion is a thriving community with a rich history. The village is home to several businesses and industries, as well as a variety of schools and parks. Ilion is also a popular destination for tourists, who come to enjoy the village’s scenic riverfront and quaint downtown.
