History of Huntington (Indiana)
The city of Huntington, Indiana was established in 1834 and is located in the northeastern part of the state. The population is approximately 17,000. The city is the county seat of Huntington County.
The first European settlers to the area were Mennonites from Pennsylvania. They established a community near the presentday town of Roanoke. In 1814, the Mennonites sold their land to the United States government. The government then sent settlers from New England and New York to the area. These settlers built homes and farms along the Wabash River.
The city of Huntington was named after Samuel Huntington, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The city was platted in 1834 and was officially incorporated in 1837.
The Wabash and Erie Canal was built through Huntington in the 1840s. This helped to boost the city’s economy and population. The canal allowed for crop transportation and also brought tourists to the city.
