History of Huddersfield

The town of Huddersfield is located in the county of West Yorkshire in England. It is situated near the confluence of the River Colne and the River Holme. The town has a population of over 145,000 people and is the 11th largest town in the United Kingdom. The history of Huddersfield dates back to the 7th century when the town was founded by the AngloSaxon chieftain, Harold Godwinson. The town was originally known as Oderesfeld and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the 12th century, the town was granted a charter by King Henry II and became a market town. In the 16th century, the town was affected by the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War. The town was a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War and was besieged by Parliamentarian forces. Following the war, the town became a centre for the textile industry. The woollen industry flourished in the town during the 18th and 19th centuries and Huddersfield became known as the ‘Capital of Wool’. The town was also home to the first ever wool exchange. The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution and became one of the largest towns in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The town continued to grow during the 20th century and became a county borough in 1974. Since then, the town has undergone regeneration and is now a thriving commercial and cultural centre.
