History of Hoylake

The name ‘Hoylake’ is derived from the Old Norse word for ‘high’ and ‘lake’, referring to the elevated position of the settlement and its proximity to the pool of water known as Meolsbreac.
The first record of Hoylake as a settlement dates from 1093, when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. At that time, Hoylake was part of the hundred of West Derby, an area which also included the settlements of West Kirby and Meols. The Domesday Book records that there were six households in Hoylake at that time.
Over the centuries, Hoylake has been home to a number of notable residents. In the 16th century, the town was the birthplace of Sir Thomas Stanley, who went on to become Lord Derby and played a key role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
