History of Hopkinsville
Hopkinsville is a city in and the county seat of Christian County, Kentucky, United States. The population at the 2010 census was 31,577. It was founded in 1796 by Light Horse Harry Lee and named for his friend Samuel Hopkins. The city is the principal city of the Hopkinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Christian and Todd counties.
Historically, Hopkinsville was the leading tobacco market in the world, processing millions of pounds of tobacco annually in the early 1900s. Tobacco was grown locally for many years, but the soil was exhausted by the early 1900s, and tobacco production began to decline. The industry was further hurt by the Great Depression and the diversification of agriculture in the area. With the opening of the Louisville and Nashville Railway in 1879, Hopkinsville became an important railway hub, as it was located at the junction of several major railway lines.
The L&N built a large railyard and shops in Hopkinsville, and the city became an important distribution center for the region.
