History of Hope

Hope is a small town in southeastern Arkansas with a population of about 10,000. The town is the primary setting of the film, Hope Floats.

The first Europeans to settle in the area were French explorers in the early 1800s. The town was later developed by American settlers moving west from the Mississippi River in the 1840s. The town was named for the hope that these settlers had for a better life.

The town thrived in the early years, with farming and lumber being the main industries. The town also had a thriving African American community. Hope was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and the town’s African American cemetery is one of the oldest in the state.

However, in the early 20th century, the timber industry began to decline, and the Great Depression hit the town hard. Many residents left Hope in search of work elsewhere.

The town began to rebound in the 1950s, when a cotton mill was built. The mill provided jobs for many residents and helped to revitalize the town. Hope continued to grow in the following years, and today it is a thriving community.
