Homestead is a city within MiamiDade County in the U.S. state of Florida. The city is located approximately 35 miles (56 km) southwest of Downtown Miami. Homestead is primarily a Miami suburb and a major agricultural area. It is the second largest city in the county after Miami, and the sixteenth largest city in the state.
The city of Homestead is located near the southern tip of Florida. It was founded in 1913 and incorporated in 1923. The city has a tropical climate and is a popular tourist destination. Homestead is also home to Everglades National Park, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.
The local economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. Homestead is the site of the annual MiamiDade County Fair and Exposition, the country’s largest fair. The city is also home to theHomesteadMiami Speedway, a racing complex that hosts the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series.
The city’s name is derived from when the Florida East Coast Railway extension to Key West was being built. The construction camp was named after the company’s President, Henry M. Flagler. Homestead Air Force Base was established in 1942 and played a vital role in the defense of the United States during the Cold War. The base was deactivated in 1992 and the property was turned over to the city of Homestead. The Homestead Historic Town Hall Museum is now located on the former base.
