Hobart is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,059 at the 2010 census. Although it has been substantially sinking since the late 19th century, it is still the county seat of Lake County.
The city was named for garlic farmer John Hobart, who laid out the city in 1849 when the area was still part of Porter County. The first nonnative settlers in the area were German immigrants, many of whom had settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, and then moved to northwest Indiana.
Hobart was formally incorporated as a city in 1869. The early years were marked by a period of growth, fueled by the railroads which crisscrossed the city and the opening of the steel mills along the lake. The city reached its peak population in 1970, after which it began a long period of decline as industry left the region.
