History of Hinton

Hinton was named after William Hinton, the first postmaster and one of the original settlers of the city. The first post office was established in 1854. The city was officially incorporated in 1893.

The city of Hinton is located in the western part of Oklahoma, just south of the town of Carnegie. Hinton is in Caddo County and is bordered by Canadian and Grady counties. The city is part of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The area that is now Hinton was settled in the early 1850s. William Hinton, the city’s namesake, was one of the first settlers. He established a post office in 1854. The city was officially incorporated in 1893.

Hinton is known as the “Gateway to the Black Mesa”, which is a popular destination for hiking, camping, and bird watching. The city is also home to the annual Black Mesa Festival, which celebrates the area’s rich history and culture.
