History of Highland Park (Michigan)
Highland Park is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city is an innerring suburb of Detroit and is one of the core cities in the Metro Detroit area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 11,776.
The area that would become Highland Park was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s. It was incorporated as a village in 1857 and became a city in 1908. The city’s early growth was based on its status as an assembly location for the automobile industry. Henry Ford built a Model T assembly plant in Highland Park in 1910 and opened the Highland Park Ford Plant in 1915. The plant was the first to massproduce cars on an assembly line.
As the automobile industry began to subside after World War II, container glass manufacturer OwensIllinois became the city’s largest employer. The company closed its Highland Park glassmaking facility in 1986, which resulted in the loss of 2,000 jobs. The city’s population also declined during this time.
Since the 1990s, Highland Park has undergone significant revitalization. New businesses have opened and older buildings have been renovated.
