The city’s name came from its parklike setting at a higher elevation than the adjacent city of Chicago. The town was initially incorporated in 1869, with a population of 500. Highland Park was developed as a wealthy resort town for Chicagoans, with many large homes and hotels built in the 1870s and 1880s. The city’s prestigious Ravinia Festival, the oldest outdoor music festival in the United States, began in August 1905.
Highland Park is home to many architectural masterpieces, including the John J.
