It is located westnorthwest of Miami, and is the only place in the county, other than Homestead, Florida, to have its own street grid numbered independently of theMiamiDade County grid.
The city’s name is most commonly credited to Muskogee origin, “Haiyakpo and hili combining to mean pretty prairie”. Alternatively, the word “Hialeah” has been traced to Seminole origin. John James Audubon and Harvey Rexford Gladwellevisited the area in 1832 and recorded that the “heights” was called “Haiyakpo” and believed by some to mean “a high place”.
