History of Hershey

The town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1903 by chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey as a company town to provide housing and amenities to workers at his chocolate factories. The Hersheypark amusement park opened in 1907 as a recreation and leisure center for the town’s residents.

The town grew steadily throughout the early 20th century as the Hershey Chocolate Company prospered. In 1918, Hershey sold his chocolate business for $1 million to a group of investors led by Edward B. Dunlap. The new owners continued to operate the chocolate factories and expand the town, adding a hospital, library, and stadium.

The Great Depression hit Hershey hard, and in 1931 the Hershey Chocolate Company was forced to declare bankruptcy. The town’s residents rallied to keep the factories open, and the town eventually regained its financial footing.

In the years following World War II, Hershey experienced a period of rapid growth as the chocolate business flourished and the town became a popular tourist destination. The Hersheypark Arena opened in Hersheypark in 1956, and the Hersheypark Stadium followed in 1959.

Today, Hershey is a thriving community with a rich history. The Hershey Chocolate Company is still headquartered in the town, and Hersheypark continues to be a major attraction. Hershey’s history is closely intertwined with the history of chocolate in America, and the town is rightfully known as the “Sweetest Place on Earth.”
