History of Herkimer
The village of Herkimer was founded in 1776 by Nicholas Herkimer, a militia general during the American Revolutionary War. The village was incorporated in 1855. The City of Herkimer is located in central New York State, west of Albany and east of Syracuse. It is one of the two principal cities of the Mohawk Valley region (the other being Utica). The area was first settled by the Mohawk tribe of Native Americans.
The name “Herkimer” is derived from the Mohawk Chief Nicolas Herckimer, who gained fame during the American Revolutionary War. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Oriskany, which was fought just north of the city. His grave is still visible today in the village cemetery.
The village was formally founded in 1776, when Colonel Herkimer built a log cabin on the banks of the Mohawk River. He soon drew other settlers to the area, and by 1784 the village had a population of about 500. The village grew rapidly in the early 19th century, and by 1832 it had a population of over 3,000.
The Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, made Herkimer a major shipping center for the region. The village was also the site of the first suspension bridge in the United States, which was built across the Mohawk River in 1835.
The village was incorporated as a city in 1855. In the second half of the 19th century, the city’s economy was largely based on manufacturing, especially the production of shoes, cigars, and hats. The city also became known for its mineral springs, which were thought to have medicinal properties.
