Hemel Hempstead is a historic market town in the county of Hertfordshire, England. The town is situated 20 miles northwest of London and is part of the Greater London Urban Area. Hemel Hempstead is the principal settlement of the Dacorum Borough Council. The town has a population of 89,000 inhabitants (2016).
The name “Hemel” comes from Old English and means “hillock” or “piece of high ground”. The name “Hempstead” comes from AngloSaxon and means “river landing place”.
The first recorded mention of the town dates back to the 8th century when a charter was granted by King Offa of Mercia. The charter allowed a market to be held every Saturday.
In the 12th century, a churches were built in the town, marking the beginning of Hemel Hempstead’s history as a religious centre.
In the 16th century, the town was greatly affected by the English Reformation. The town’s two churches were demolished and a new one, St. Mary’s, was built in 1534.
During the 17th century, the town was a target for both Parliamentary and Royalist troops during the English Civil War. In 1643, the Battle of Hemel Hempstead took place just outside the town.
