Hayward, Wisconsin is a city located in Sawyer County in the northwestern part of the state. The city was originally settled in 1883 and was originally named after John Hayward, the first EuropeanAmerican settler in the area. The city was incorporated in 1902.
The area that is now Hayward was originally inhabited by the Chippewa people. The Chippewa had several villages in the area, including one that was located on the presentday site of Hayward. The Chippewa referred to the Hayward area as “Chewawahkoan,” which translates to “place of pines.”
John Hayward was a surveyor who was sent to the area in 1883 to survey land for the Northwestern Railroad. When he arrived, he decided to settle in the area. He built a cabin on the shores of what is now known as Hayward Lake.
Hayward quickly became a popular destination for hunters and fishermen. The city was also a popular stop for logging operations. The first sawmill in Hayward was built in 1885.
