History of Harrisburg (Illinois)
The city of Harrisburg, Illinois is located in the southernmost part of the state, about 50 miles from Evansville, Indiana. It is the county seat of Saline County and has a population of just over 9,000 people. Harrisburg was founded in 1827 and was named after James Harris, who surveyed the town site. The city was initially settled by farmers and stock raisers, but later became a coal mining center with several mines operating in the area. Mining continued to be an important part of the Harrisburg economy until the early 1970s when the last mine closed.
