History of Harlan
Harlan, Kentucky, was settled by Revolutionary War veterans in 1796 and named for Silas Harlan. The city of Harlan was established in 1908. Harlan became the county seat in 1917 after a disputed election. The county courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the early 1900s, coal mining was the major industry in Harlan County and many of the town’s residents were employed by the coal mines. The town was also home to many of the workers who built the Kentucky and Tennessee Railway. The Harlan Courier, the first newspaper in the county, began publication in 1909.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Harlan was a center of the civil rights movement in Kentucky. In May 1961, the Freedom Riders stopped in Harlan to desegregate the Greyhound Bus station. In September 1962, James Bevel, Andrew Young, and other civil rights activists held a rally in Harlan to register AfricanAmerican voters.
In 1974, the federal government designated Harlan a enterprise zone, which provided tax incentives for businesses to locate in the city. The first enterprise zone in Kentucky, it was one of the first in the nation.
