History of Hanover (New Hampshire)

Founded in 1727 by a group of Massachusetts Puritans moving westward in search of new land, Hanover was originally known as ‘Dummerstown,’ a name which it retained until 1761. The town was officially incorporated in 1761 and named after the British royal House of Hanover, in honor of the reigning King George III, a member of that House.

Hanover’s central location made it a logical choice as the home of Dartmouth College, which was established in 1769. The college rapidly became an important part of the town’s economy and culture. In the early 19th century, Hanover was also home to a number of private academies, which served as preparatory schools for Dartmouth and other colleges.

The arrival of the railroad in the 1850s brought increased trade and tourism to Hanover, which grew steadily throughout the rest of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The town’s Main Street retains its Victorianera commercial character, and is lined with a variety of shops and restaurants.
