History of Handforth

Handforth is a civil parish and a town in the county of Cheshire, England. The town had a population of 8,741 at the 2011 census. It is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport and the parliamentary constituency of Stockport South.

The origins of the name are uncertain but it is possibly derived from Old English “hund” (hound) and “ford” (ford); meaning “a ford where hounds are kept”.

The earliest recorded history of Handforth is from the 12th century when King John granted a charter for a weekly market. In the 13th century, a number of forges were built in the town and it became a centre for the iron industry.

The industrial revolution led to the construction of the Stockport to Handforth railway line in 1842, which brought further growth to the town.

During the Second World War, an RAF base was built at Handforth and it was also the site of a prisoner of war camp.
