Hamden is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The town’s name is derived from the Old English word for “hill”.[3] The town of Hamden was purchased from a local chief named Tontine by the English settlers in 1614. Tontine was the sachem of the Mattabesetts, a subtribe of the Quinnipiacs. The Mattabesetts referred to the area now called Hamden as “Land of the Quick Well”.[4]
