History of Halifax
In the early morning hours of June 6, 1755, the largest explosion in North American history leveled the city of Halifax in Nova Scotia. The blast was caused by a massive fire that ignited more than 2,000 wooden barrels of gunpowder stored in the basement of a warehouses along the Halifax waterfront. The fire spread quickly and soon engulfed the entire city. More than 2,000 people were killed and another 9,000 were injured in the explosion.
Halifax was founded in 1749 as a British military outpost. It was designed to be a buffer against French expansion into the region. The city quickly grew into an important economic center for the region, with a thriving fishing and shipbuilding industry. The city was also an important staging ground for British military operations in the French and Indian War.
The Halifax explosion was the deadliest manmade disaster in Canadian history. It devastation caused by the blast was so extreme that it was compared to the effects of a nuclear bomb. It destroy or damage more than 1,600 buildings and left more than 12,000 people homeless. It also created a large tsunami that swept through the harbor and cause additional damage.
