The town is on the eastern side of the M62 motorway, adjacent to the Liverpool outer ring road (A57 road), 12 miles (19 km) east of Liverpool city centre and 5 miles (8 km) south of St Helens.
The Ford factory in Halewood built the Mk2 Escort, the Orion and the Courier van, as well as the Ka, StreetKa, Puma and Focus models. The plant currently manufactures the Range Rover Evoque and the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Litherland Sports Park is also in Halewood.

The forest of West Derby, of which Halewood was a part, was a royal hunting ground from the 12th century. In 1334, the forest was disafforested, and the land was divided among the landowners. Halewood subsequently became a farming community, with the land being used for pasture and meadow.
