Hackensack is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 43,010, reflecting an increase of 333 from the 42,677 counted in the 2000 Census. An innerring suburb of New York City, Hackensack is located approximately 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Midtown Manhattan. From a number of locations, the New York City skyline can be seen.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the United States, is located in Hackensack. The area was once a part of the Lenape Native American territory and Hackensack, traditionally spelled Achkinhenhcky with many spelling variations, is derived from the Lenape language.
In 2009, Hackensack was named one of the “10 Best Places to Retire” in the United States by Bankrate.com. In the 16th century, the first European settlers were Dutch. A plaque on the Hackensack Municipal Building (built in 1926) commemorates this history. The area was officially named New Barbadoes Township until 1921, but it was informally known as Hackensack since at least the 18th century.[16] The name comes from the Lenape Native American worship of Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary.[17][18]
During the early modern era, Hackensack was a prosperous village of around 60 farmers, close to the Dutch settlement of Ackingsahach (Achter Kol, English: “Behind the Ridge”) in New Netherland, the present day Hudson County, New Jersey. By the mid19th century, the economy changed as the village became more of a residential community for Manhattanites seeking to escape the stresses of city life. The construction of the Erie Railroad in the 1850s brought many to the area looking for work, and by 1900 half of Hackensack’s population was either working in New York City or on the railways.
The city started to experience a rebirth in the late 1960s when cars began to use the Pulaski Skyway to reach the Meadowlands Sports Complex, bringing with them an influx of visitors from New York City. The complex, which currently includes MetLife Stadium and Izod Center, has been a major contributor to Hackensack’s economy.

The City of Hackensack is located in Bergen County, New Jersey. It is the county seat and has a population of 43,010 people. The city was officially founded in 1693, although human habitation in the area dates back over 10,000 years. The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the first known people to settle in the Hackensack area.
The name “Hackensack” comes from the Lenape word “Ackingsahsack”, which means “place of many groundhogs”. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the area, and they established the first European settlement in 1614. The Dutch named the settlement “New Barbadoes Township” after the island of Barbados in the Caribbean.
In 1693, the township was officially chartered as the Borough of Hackensack. It was formally incorporated as a city in 1921. Hackensack has a long and rich history. It was the site of several battles during the American Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Yorktown. The city was also home to abolitionist leader Harriet Tubman during the 19th century.
Today, Hackensack is a diverse and vibrant city. It is home to the headquarters of several major corporations, including Merck & Co. and Toys “R” Us. The city is also home to Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the largest hospitals in the state of New Jersey.
