History of Gunnison
Gunnison, originally called Gunnisonville, was founded in 1850 as a mining town. It was named after John W. Gunnison, a United States Army engineer and surveyor who surveyed the area in 1853. The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, reaching a population of over 3,000 people by 1880. The city’s economy was primarily based on mining and agriculture, with mining being the primary industry in the early years. The city’s population declined sharply in the 20th century, falling to less than 2,000 by 1950. However, the city has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with its population increasing to over 5,000 by 2010. The city’s economy is now primarily based on tourism, with many visitors coming to ski and snowboard at the nearby Crested Butte Mountain Resort.
