Groton is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,873 at the 2010 census. It is home to two of the four campuses of the University of Massachusetts Amherst: UMass Amherst and UMass Medical School.
The area now known as Groton was originally inhabited by the Nashaway tribe of Native Americans. The town was first settled by Europeans in 1655, when a group led by Peter Pratt purchased land from the Nashaway. The town was officially incorporated in 1705.
The town’s early history is closely linked to the history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Groton was a frontier town, and was frequently attacked by Native Americans during the early years of the colony. In 1676, during King Philip’s War, the town was attacked and burned by a group of Native Americans led by Philip himself.
During the 18th century, Groton became known as a shipbuilding town. It was also during this time that the town became a center of the abolitionist movement.
