History of Gretna
Gretna is a city in and the parish seat of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. Gretna is on the west bank of the Mississippi River, just east and across the river from New Orleans. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner metropolitan area. The population was 17,736 at the 2010 census.
Gretna was incorporated in 1913 as a suburb of New Orleans, and named for the German city of Marburg an der Lahn. Gretna quickly became the secondlargest city in Jefferson Parish after the parish seat, New Orleans. Due to its close proximity to New Orleans, Gretna served as a bedroom community for the metropolitan area. In the late 19th century, Gretna was also known for being the final destination on the Underground Railroad, as many fugitive slaves would cross the Mississippi River into Gretna, where they were safe from capture and returned to their families.
Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Gretna gained national attention when the Louisiana National Guard was dispatched to quell looters who were attempting to raid stores in the city. When the levees failed in New Orleans and surrounding areas, water from the flood began to pour into Gretna through the Industrial Canal, which runs alongside the west bank of the Mississippi River. As a result, Gretna became one of the first cities in the nation to be placed under martial law.
