The City of Grenada is located in the northwest corner of Mississippi, approximately 100 miles east of Memphis, TN and 120 miles south of Jackson, MS. Grenada is the county seat of Grenada County and is situated in the YazooMississippi Delta, which is renowned for its agricultural production. The Grenada Lake Dam, built in 1954 for flood control, is also a large contributor to the economy and recreational activities in the Grenada area.
The City of Grenada was founded in 1836 and was originally named Pittsburg. The town was renamed Grenada by Spanish settlers, who were reminded of the exotic country in South America. The first court house was built of logs in 1837. A twostory frame building was erected in 1839 to house the growing court system. This building also served as a community center where religious services and social events were held.
In the early years, Grenada was the terminus of the diminutive Tugaloo River Steamboat Navigation Company. Grenada gained prominence in 1842 when the future president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, rode his horse, Black Hawk, into town and disembarked at the St. James Hotel. Davis was on his way to inspect some property he had purchased in the Delta.
As the years passed, Grenada continued to grow and prosper. In 1849, the Grenada Free Press, the first newspaper in Grenada County, was established. In 1851, the Catholic Diocese of Natchez was established and Grenada became the site of the first Catholic church in the county, Sacred Heart.
In 1878, the Grenada Railway and Light Company was chartered and within a year the first passenger train arrived in Grenada. The coming of the railroad made Grenada a major commercial center for the region and increased the population to over 2,000.
The years between 1880 and1900 were prosperous ones for Grenada. The population quadrupled as the economy boomed. New businesses and churches were established and Grenada became known as the “Hub City” of the YazooMississippi Delta.
The first hospital in Grenada, Grenada Hospital, was established in 1903. Grenada College, now The University of Mississippi at Grenada, was founded in 1911.
As the 20th century progressed, Grenada continued to grow and prosper. In the 1920s, Grenada became known as the “Crossroads of the Delta” because of the new highways that crisscrossed the city. These highways made Grenada a hub of activity for the region.
The Great Depression hit Grenada hard, but the city recovered and continued to grow. In the 1940s, Grenada became known as the “Strawberry Capital of the World” because of the large strawberry farms in the area. The 1950s were a time of growth and progress for the city. New schools, churches, and businesses were established.
The 1960s were a turbulent time for Grenada. The civil rights movement was making its way through the South and Grenada was not immune to the tension and turmoil. However, the city did manage to avoid the major riots and violence that plagued other cities in the Delta.
The 1970s brought more growth and progress to Grenada. New industries, schools, and hospitals were established. The 1980s were a time of recession for the nation, but Grenada fared better than most cities. The 1990s were a time of growth and expansion for the city.
