Greenville is a city in and the county seat of Hunt County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 25,557, making it the fourthlargest city in the county and the 21stlargest in the state. Greenville was founded in 1846 after it was determined by popular vote to become the county seat of Hunt County. It was named for Thomas J. Green, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto.
The city grew rapidly north of the original site (the present Main Street was once known as “Depot Street”), and green space was gradually displaced by railroads, warehouses and other commercial development. The current downtown area was developed in the late 19th century, when many of the large Victorian homes were constructed. The city of Greenville is located in Hunt County, Texas, United States. The population was 26, 636 at the 2010 census. Greenville was founded in 1846. It is the county seat of Hunt County. The city is also home to Delta State University. The city is named after Thomas J. Green, a general in the Texas Revolution.
Greenville was originally settled by pioneers from Kentucky and Tennessee. These early settlers were attracted to the area by the good farmland and the abundance of timber. In 1846, the Republic of Texas established a county government for Hunt County. The new county was named after Memucan Hunt, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the first Secretary of the Treasury for the Republic of Texas. The city of Greenville was founded on April 28, 1846, when the first sale of lots was held. The city was named after Thomas J. Green, a general in the Texas Revolution.
Early in its history, Greenville was a center of activity for the Texas Revolution. Several battles were fought in and around Greenville during the war. In 1864, during the Civil War, Greenville was briefly occupied by Union troops.
Greenville has a long history of education. In 1869, Greenville Male and Female College was founded. The school changed its name to Greenville College in 1874. In 1891, the college was relocated to Commerce, Texas. In 1897, Greenville Female College was founded. The school changed its name to Denton Female College in 1901.
