Greenville is a city in northern Ohio, about halfway between Toledo and Columbus. It is the county seat of Darke County. The population was 13,227 at the 2010 census. Greenville is noted for its granite quarries and for the large Steam Thresher Reunion and Antique Power Show held annually on the fourth weekend in June.

The city was founded in 1808 by Henry Whitney, who purchased land at the confluence of the Miami and Stillwater rivers. The name “Greenville” was chosen because of the green foliage surrounding the town. The town became the county seat in 1817 after Darke County was formed. It was incorporated as a village in 1837 and as a city in 1888.

The first mayor of Greenville was Jonathan Stratton, elected in 1838. The town was largely destroyed in the Great Darke County Tornado of 1856, but was quickly rebuilt.

The Greenville Street Railway Company was established in 1889 and operated electric streetcars in Greenville from 1890 to 1927.

The Wright brothers visited Greenville in 1904, and Wilbur Wright taught a group of local men how to fly the Wright Flyer. These men, known as the “Greenville Wrights”, went on to form the Pioneer Aviation Society, which is now the National Aviation Hall of Fame.

In June 1911, combustion engines were used for the first time to power the streetcars. In September 1911, the Greenville Street Railway Company ceased operation of the streetcars.

The Steam Thresher Reunion and Antique Power Show, held annually on the fourth weekend in June, is the largest show of its kind in the United States. The event features over 1,000 exhibits of antique steam engines, tractors, and other farm equipment. History of Greenville (Ohio)

In 1749, a group of Baptists from Pennsylvania moved to the area and founded a settlement called New Jerusalem. In 1754, the settlement was attacked and destroyed by the Delaware Indians. The survivors fled to Pennsylvania.

In 1793, a man named John Green came to the area with a group of settlers and established the village of Greenville. The village was named after Green, who was the first postmaster. The village quickly grew and prospered. In 1803, Greenville was officially incorporated as a city.
