History of Greensboro
Greensboro is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is the county seat of Guilford County, and the thirdlargest city in the state. Greensboro is the principal city of the Greensboro–WinstonSalem–High Point CSA, a twelvecounty metropolitan area that covers much of the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. The Greensboro metropolitan area encompasses Greensboro and Randolph Counties. As of the 2010 census, Greensboro’s city population was 269,666, and in 2016 the estimated population was 285,342.
In the early 1600s, Greensboro was settled along the Occoneechee Trail, a Native American path between the Appalachian Mountains and the coast. The trail intersected with the Great Wagon Road, a major eastwest colonial route. In 1771, while crossing Guilford Courthouse, British General Cornwallis noted that the settlers there were “so acoustic that they could be heard conferring at half a mile distant.”
One of the first settlers to build a home in what is now Greensboro was Richard Joshua (R.J.) Reynolds, who arrived in the area in the late 1750s. By the early 1800s, more than 40 families had settled in the area. In 1808, Greensborough was established as the county seat of Guilford County. It was named in honor of Nathanael Greene, a general of the American Revolutionary War.
The town was originally built around a central courthouse square, which remains today as the heart of Greensboro’s downtown. The county’s courthouse and jail were both located on the square, as were many of the town’s businesses.
In the early 1800s, Greensboro was a thriving community with a number of businesses and services. These included three hotels, several taverns, a number of shops, a post office, a stagecoach stop, and a weekly newspaper. The town also had a number of manufacturing businesses, including a foundry, a tannery, a textile mill, and a tobacco factory.
In 1837, the North Carolina General Assembly voted to move the state capital from Raleigh to Greensborough. However, this plan was never carried out, and in 1866, the state legislature voted to move the capital back to Raleigh.
Despite this setback, Greensboro continued to grow and prosper. In 1856, the first railroad line was built through the town, connecting Greensboro to other markets in the state and region. This made it easier for businesses to get their products to market and also attracted new businesses to the area.
The Civil War brought considerable changes to Greensboro. The town was occupied by Union troops for most of the conflict, and many of the town’s businesses were destroyed. However, Greensboro soon rebounded after the war, and by the late 1800s, it was once again a thriving community.
In the early 1900s, Greensboro underwent a period of tremendous growth. This was due in part to the influx of new industries, including textile and tobacco factories. The population of the town skyrocketed, from just over 5,000 in 1900 to more than 50,000 by 1930.
During the twentieth century, Greensboro continued to grow, becoming a major city in the state and region. In 1960, four AfricanAmerican students from Greensboro staged a sitin at a local Woolworth’s lunch counter, sparking a nationwide movement for civil rights. Today, Greensboro is a vibrant, thriving city with a rich history and a bright future.
