History of Great Neck
The history of the city of Great Neck, on Long Island in the United States, dates back over 400 years to the time of the first European settlement in the area. The earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Matinecock Native American tribe, who lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of the Europeans. The first European settlers in the area were the Dutch, who arrived in the early 1600s and established the town of Flushing. The English soon followed, and in 1662 the area was officially annexed by the English Crown. The town changed hands several times during the American Revolution, and was eventually burned down by the British in 1776. After the war, the area was rebuilt and became a prosperous farming community. In the late 19th century, the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road led to a population boom, and the area began to develop into a suburban commuter town. Today, Great Neck is a thriving community with a rich history and a bright future.
