History of Great Falls

In the 1860s, Great Falls was the site of many enormous waterfalls created by glaciers. The falls were so large that they were used to power sawmills and other industry in the area. The waterfalls eventually eroded away, but the rocks and other debris from the glaciers remain. The city was named for these waterfalls.

The first inhabitants of the area were Native Americans. The Blackfoot, Crow, and Gros Ventre tribes all lived in the area. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in 1805. In 1806, Meriwether Lewis wrote about the Great Falls in his journal, calling them the ” Great Falls of the Missouri .”

Great Falls was first settled in 1864 by a group of gold prospectors. The city was officially founded in 1883. The population grew rapidly after the construction of the Great Northern Railway in 1893.

Today, Great Falls is a city of approximately 60,000 people. It is the home of Malmstrom Air Force Base and the headquarters of Montana Power Company. The city is also known for its art community and the C.M. Russell Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of the works of Charles M.
