The waterfalls eventually eroded away, but the rocks and other debris from the glaciers remain. The city was named for these waterfalls.

The first inhabitants of the area were Native Americans. The Blackfoot, Crow, and Gros Ventre tribes all lived in the area. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in 1805. In 1806, Meriwether Lewis wrote about the Great Falls in his journal, calling them the ” Great Falls of the Missouri .”

Great Falls was first settled in 1864 by a group of gold prospectors. The city was officially founded in 1883. The population grew rapidly after the construction of the Great Northern Railway in 1893.
