History of Great Dunmow

Great Dunmow is a town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It was historically part of the Hundred of Dunmow and the Liberty of Hedingham. The town is on the Stort Valley Way, a Roman road from Braughing to Colchester.

The first record of the town is in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was recorded as Dunmow. The name is thought to mean ‘mound in the meadow’.

The town was granted a market charter in 1256 by Henry III. This allowed weekly markets to be held, and two annual fairs. The charter also allowed for the construction of a town hall and a jail.

In 1319, Edward II granted a charter for a weekly market and an annual fair to be held on the feast of St. James.

The town’s market square, which is now called the High Street, was used for bullbaiting and other sports. In 1541, a law was passed forbidding such activities.

In 1707, an Act of Parliament was passed redrawing the boundaries of the town. This resulted in the creation of two new wards, East and West.

The parish church of St. Mary the Virgin dates from the 12th century. The current building was constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries.

There are several Grade I listed buildings in the town, including the church, the town hall, and several houses in the High Street.

Great Dunmow was the home of the Flitch Trials, a medieval custom in which a married couple could claim a flitch (side) of bacon if they could prove that they had not quarrelled for a year and a day. The last trial was held in 1855.

The town has a Museum of Local History, which is housed in the former premises of the town’s flour mill.

Great Dunmow is twinned with the town of Dunmow in the United States.
