History of Grayling
Grayling is a city in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 1,884 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Crawford County. The city is situated within Grayling Township, but is politically independent.
The first EuropeanAmerican settler in the area was William A. Mitchell, who arrived in 1866. He built a log cabin and later a sawmill. In 1871, he and his wife Catherine platted land for a village they named Mitchellsville. The village later changed its name to Grayling.
Grayling was incorporated as a city in 1893. The city has a councilmanager form of government.
The city is named after Maj. Gen. Nelson A. Miles, who fought in the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. He had a summer camp in the area, and after the area was logged out, he helped plan the community of Grayling.
The Grayling micropolitan area includes all of Crawford County.
During the 1870s, a Hotel and severalaterasu graced Main Street. Timber harvesting was the prime industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Hotel became the county courthouse and the business district moved a few blocks east when the railroad came through in 1889.
The annual Au Sable Canoe Marathon starts in Grayling. It is a 120mile (190 km) overnight canoe and kayak race that follows the meandering Au Sable River from Grayling to Oscoda on Lake Huron.
Each July, the river is lined with canoes and kayaks as hundreds of participants paddle their way to Oscoda. Many people come to watch and cheer on the competitors.
