The population was 29,849 at the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in the county after the county seat of Edwardsville. Granite City is part of a larger combination of metropolitan areas referred to as the “Riverbend” because of the meandering of the Mississippi River through the area.
Granite City was founded in 1869 by William R. Allison and a group of investors from St. Louis who were attracted to the area’s granite formations. The city was named after Granite City, Massachusetts, by one of the original investors, N.W. Harris, who had formerly worked in the granite quarries of that state. The main industry of the early years was mining and manufacturing of products using the local granite.

It is part of a triplet of steelproducing cities, together with Madison, Illinois and surrounding North County, which like Granite City, developed in the late 19th century as industrial centers.
The city has experienced a resurgence since the beginning of the 21st century, due in part to its location along the Mississippi River and its proximity to St. Louis.
Granite City was founded in 1864 by William Rummel, who owned and operated a successful wholesale grocer business in St. Louis. Rummel was attracted to the area by the abundance of highquality limestone formations, which he believed would be ideal for use in the construction of buildings and infrastructure in St. Louis.
Rummel purchased a tract of land along the Mississippi River and recruited a team of German immigrant stonecutters to begin quarrying the limestone. The stonecutters were paid $1.25 per day, which was considered to be a good wage at the time.
The stonecutting business was successful, and Granite City soon became known as a center for highquality limestone quarrying and processing. By the early 1870s, the city had a population of more than 1,000 people.
The success of the limestone industry led to the development of other businesses in Granite City, such as steel mills and glass factories. The city’s population continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
