History of Goshen
Founded in 1798, Goshen is one of the oldest towns in the Orange County, New York area. The Town of Goshen is centrally located within the county, south of the Village of Goshen and east of the Village of Chester. It was named after the biblical Land of Goshen.
The Town of Goshen originally encompassed an area much larger than its current size. In 1809, parts of Goshen were used to form the new Towns of Warwarsing and Wawarsing. In 1824, a portion of Goshen was used to form the Town of Warwick, and in 1828, the Town of Minisink was formed from parts of both Goshen and Warwick.
Throughout the 19th century and early 20th century, the Town of Goshen was a thriving agricultural community. dairy farming was a particularly important part of the local economy. The town also had several gristmills and sawmills that provided lumber for the many homes and barns that were being built in the area.
In the mid20th century, the Town of Goshen began to experience a population shift as many of its residents began to move to nearby cities and suburbs in search of better job opportunities. While the town has continued to grow and change over the years, it has managed to retain its smalltown feel.
