History of Gloucester
Gloucester /ˈɡlɒstər/ is a city and county seat of Essex County, Massachusetts, in the United States. The city lies at the north end of Cape Ann, on Massachusetts’ North Shore. It is a historic seaport and is the oldest fishing port in the United States. The city is named for Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester, an English regent who ruled the Kingdom of England during much of the 1400s.
The first European settlers of Gloucester arrived in 1623, led by Richard Stealth of Yarmouth, Gloucestershire, England. The town was officially incorporated in 1642. At that time, it included all of Cape Ann, from presentday Salem to Rockport.
During the American Revolutionary War, the citizens of Gloucester were staunch supporters of the Patriot cause. The town was frequently raided by British forces, and the harbor was the site of the Capture of the Eagle, a small British warship, by a group of Patriots in 1775. In 1778, Gloucester was burned by British troops during the Siege of Gloucester.
After the war, Gloucester began to recover. Fishing and shipbuilding, which had been the town’s main industries, flourished once again. The town was an important whaling port in the 19th century; in 1851, Gloucester had the largest fleet of whaling ships in the world.
The city declined in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the decline of the fishing and shipbuilding industries, but revived in the 20th century as a tourist destination.
