The original settlement of the area was known as “Corners”. The community was founded by two entrepreneurs from Vermont, George Storrow and William Gilchrist. They set up a sawmill and gristmill at the Great Falls in 1808. In 1812, the name was changed to Glens Falls, after the falls on the Hudson River.

The city grew rapidly in the 19th century, due to the growth of the paper industry. The area was known for its many paper mills, which produced a wide variety of paper products. Glens Falls was also home to many other industries, including iron foundries, machine shops, and breweries.

The city reached its peak of population in 1960, with a population of over 16,000. The city has since declined in population, due to the decline of the paper industry. The city’s economy is now based on tourism, healthcare, and service industries.
