Glen Ellyn is a village located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village population was 27,450. Glen Ellyn is west of Chicago along Interstate 88 and Lake Street. It is the home of College of Dupage and Southern Illinois University School of Nursing’sDuPage campus.
The Village of Glen Ellyn is home to a charming, historic downtown that serves as the hub of the community. Downtown Glen Ellyn is anchored by the Metra train station, which provides residents with easy access to Chicago. The downtown area features a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as a number of community events throughout the year.
Downtown Glen Ellyn also features the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, which is a stateoftheart performing arts facility that hosts a variety of events throughout the year. The MAC is also home to the college’s acclaimed arts education programs.

History of Glen Ellyn
Glen Ellyn is a village located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, the village had a total population of 27,450. Glen Ellyn was founded in 1834 and incorporated in 1892. The village is located approximately 25 miles west of downtown Chicago.
The first European settlers in the area were Germans who settled in the town of Danby in the 1830s. In 1834, Lewis Wheaton, a real estate speculator from Vermont, and his business partner, Colonel Benjamin Fay, purchased 262 acres (1.06 km2) of land in the area now known as Glen Ellyn. Wheaton soon after become the first postmaster of the area.
The Germantown Colony, a group of German Lutherans who had settled in Indiana, purchased 500 acres (2.0 km2) of land in the area in 1837. The following year, the Lutherans erected a log cabin church on what is now the corner of Main Street and Geneva Road. In 1842, the German Protestants erected a stone church on the same site. This church is now known as Trinity Lutheran Church and is the oldest church in Glen Ellyn.
In 1845, the Wheaton brothers (Lewis and Warren) platted the village of Wheaton Junction, which consisted of 80 acres (320,000 m2) of land. In 1853, Warren Wheaton’s wife, Ellen, was the first white woman to die in the village. She was killed by a stray bullet while sitting in her home.
In 1856, the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railroad built a track through Wheaton Junction, providing residents with a direct link to Chicago. The Village of Wheaton Junction was officially incorporated in 1859. The name of the village was changed to Glen Ellyn in 1874.
The Village of Glen Ellyn was officially incorporated in 1892. Prior to the incorporation, the village was governed by a board of trustees. The first village president was George H. Bates, who served from 1892 to 1894.
The Village of Glen Ellyn is home to several historical landmarks. The Glen Oak Country Club, which was founded in 1893, is the oldest country club in Illinois. The Glen Ellyn Historical Society, which was founded in 1945, is headquartered in the historic Volunteer Fireman’s Hall. The Woman’s Club of Glen Ellyn, which was founded in 1894, is headquartered in the former Village Hall.
Glen Ellyn is also home to the College of DuPage, the second largest community college in the state of Illinois. The college was founded in 1967 and enrolls more than 28,000 students.
In recent years, Glen Ellyn has experienced a revitalization of its downtown area. New restaurants and shops have opened, and a new public library has been built.
