History of Geneva (Indiana)
Geneva, Indiana is a picturesque city located in the northeastern corner of Indiana’s Jay County. The city lies along the scenic Maumee River and is situated just south of the IndianaOhio border. Geneva has a long and rich history dating back to the early 19th century.
The area that is now Geneva was first settled in 1816 by John Vance, a Revolutionary War veteran. Vance named the new settlement after his hometown of Geneva, New York. The following year, a small log cabin was built on the banks of the Maumee River and served as the first courthouse for Jay County.
By 1838, the town had grown to include a gristmill, sawmill, blacksmith shop, and a handful of other businesses. In 1846, the decision was made to move the county seat from Portland to Geneva. The move proved to be a wise one as the town continued to grow and prosper in the years that followed.
The completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1853 brought even more growth to Geneva.
