History of Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg is a city in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. It is located 38 miles southeast of Knoxville and its population was 3,944 at the 2010 Census. Gatlinburg is the principal city of the Gatlinburg, Tennessee micropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Sevier County. The city is a popular vacation resort, as it rests on the outskirts of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Gatlinburg was founded in 1856 by Radford Gatlin, who named the city after his father, William. It became a thriving logging town due to its proximity to the Big Pigeon River. In order to spur economic growth, the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad was completed to Gatlinburg in 1883 on land donated by local businessmen and construction magnates.
The construction of the Great Smoky Mountains Parkway in the 1930s brought increased tourism to the area and helped Gatlinburg to develop as a vacation resort. Other significant events in the city’s history include a devastating fire in 1992 and the construction of an aquarium in 2005.
Gatlinburg is located at the confluence of the West Fork of the Little Pigeon River and its tributary, the East Fork. The average elevation of Gatlinburg is 1,925 feet (587 m) above sea level.
