History of Galesburg
Galesburg is a city in Illinois, United States. This city is about 55 miles northwest of Peoria. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 32,195. It is the county seat of Knox County. Galesburg is home to Knox College, a private fouryear liberal arts college.
Galesburg was founded in 1838 by George Washington Gale, a Methodist minister from New York state. Gale intended Galesburg to be a “New Englandstyle” community, and he laid out the town in a grid pattern with wide streets and sidewalks. By 1850, Galesburg had 1,828 residents, and it was the fifth largest city in Illinois.
The first public school in Galesburg opened in 1856. The city also had its first newspaper, The Galesburg Republican, in 1857. In 1858, Galesburg was invaded by a mob of conservatives who opposed abolitionism and burned down the office of the Republican.
During the Civil War, Galesburg was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and many fugitive slaves found their way to freedom here. In 1864, the city was the site of the National Convention of the Radical Democracy, a shortlived political party.
Galesburg flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad built a major center in Galesburg, and the city became an important stop on the “CB&Q”.
