History of Fulwood

Fulwood is a civil parish and suburb of the city of Preston, Lancashire, England. It lies north of Preston on the outskirts of the Ribble Valley. Historically part of the Fulwood was an ancient parish in the hundred of Amounderness and was recorded as “Fullenwood” in the Domesday Book in 1086.

The village grew up around Fulwood Hall, which was probably built in the late 13th or early 14th century. The hall was the seat of the local gentry, the Singletons, for many centuries. In 1764, the heiress of the Singletons, Betty Lane, married Thomas Tomlinson, and Fulwood Hall passed into the hands of the Tomlinson family. Fulwood Hall was partially destroyed by fire in 1828, and was rebuilt in 1850.

Fulwood Barracks, on Watling Street, was built in 1848 to house troops stationed in Preston during the chartist riots. The barracks were originally called Havelock Barracks, after Sir Henry Havelock, but were renamed Fulwood Barracks in 1922.

Fulwood was incorporated into the borough of Preston in 1974.
