History of Fresno
Fresno, California, is a city in Fresno County and the county seat of Fresno County. Fresno is the fifth largest city in California, the 34th largest city in the United States, and the central city of the Fresno metropolitan area, which encompasses all of Fresno County. Fresno is located in the San Joaquin Valley, 233 miles (375 km) southeast of San Francisco, 195 miles (314 km) northwest of Los Angeles and about 60 miles (97 km) north of Yosemite National Park. Downtown Fresno has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s, when the city was first founded. The area was originally settled by Native Americans of the Yokuts tribe. In 1856, the first Caucasian settlers arrived in the area, led by Swiss colonist John Sutter. The city was officially founded in 1872, named after the nearby Fresno River. The city began to grow rapidly after the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1873.
