Freeport is a small city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States, located on the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,049.
The city is notable as the site of the Younkin Airfield and as a center for shrimping and fishing.
The area around Freeport has been inhabited for many centuries by peoples of various cultures. The first Europeans to establish a permanent settlement in the area were the Spanish in the mid16th century. however, no remains of any Spanish settlement have been found.
In 1766, the French established a fort on Garcitas Creek, near the present site of Freeport. The fort was abandoned in 1769 after the French left the area.
In 1822, Stephen F. Austin received a grant of land in what is now southern Brazoria County. Austin founded the town of Velasco, which served as the capital of his colony. Velasco was raided repeatedly by pirates, and the Mexican government eventually had the fort dismantled to put an end to the pirate threat.
In 1824, Austin’s colony was annexed by Mexico. Velasco became a Mexican port, and the town flourished. However, the outbreak of the Texas Revolution in 1835 led to the abandonment of Velasco.

The city is an industrial and shipping center, whose port is the oldest in Texas. It is the site of the secondlargest chemical complex in the United States, owned by Dow Chemical Company. Freeport was founded as a bridgehead in November 1912 by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. It was named after a nearby free port on Galveston Bay, which had long been established by Marcus Larsson. The first settlers arrived in Jones Creek in early January 1913.
The town was platted in August 1913, and incorporated in December 1913. Freeport became acity in September 1917. The ratiocination for building the new town was to provide a railroad stop for exporting the bountiful rice crop from Brazoria County. Rice had first been planted in the county in 1821. It became the second leading industry. Theading industry in early Freeport was oystering. By 1929, 1,257 freight cars of oysters left the Freeport Slyunx Oyster Co. each year. Buffalo Bayou, Brazos River, and San Jacinto River all border on Freeport. Industries located here include an oil refinery, chemical plants, a large aluminum smelter, and a steel mill. Coral and other marine life in offshore waters were killed in midJanuary 2011 when a heat exchanger at a Dow Chemical plant leaked 2butoxyethanol (EGBE). This chemical and many others are essential to the production of plastics. According to the Freeport Historical Museum, the Dow Chemical Company is the city’s largest employer.
At one time there were also many small community theaters and an active civic music association. The Freeport Art Museum hosted many exhibitions and provided educational opportunities in the visual arts.
Freeport is home to the Freeport Nautical Museum and the Aquatic Hall of Fame. The museum faces the harbor and offers handson exhibits about area maritime history. It is located in a renovated 1932 Art Deco building that was formerly the Abercrombie and Fitch outlet store.
The Aquatic Hall of Fame, which began in 1966, is adjacent to the Nautical Museum. The hall honors “those who have made significant contributions to the sport of fishing.” It sponsors an annual saltwater fishing tournament, which in 2007 had more than 1,400 registered boats.

The worst damage was sustained by the Freeport Memorial Library, which was destroyed by a 12foot storm surge.
In 2000, the city was hit by Tropical Storm Allison, which caused $150 million in damage, displaced 6,000 residents, and resulted in the deaths of 23 people. The city recovered from these two devastating storms, but then in 2008 was dealt another blow when Hurricane Ike made landfall. Ike caused an estimated $2.6 billion in damage to the city and displaced 30,000 residents.
Despite these natural disasters, the city of Freeport has slowly been rebuilding and is now home to a number of new businesses and attractions. The Freeport LNG terminal, which is the first of its kind in North America, began operating in 2010, and the city is also home to the boardwalkstyle Harborwalk, which opened in 2012. The future looks bright for Freeport, and the city is slowly but surely returning to its predisaster glory.
