Freeport is known for its role in the abolitionist movement, as the site of the founding of the first African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1834, and as the final destination of the Underground Railroad.
The city is also home to the Atwood homestead, the oldest house in Stephenson County, as well as the First Church of Christ, Scientist, which Frank Lloyd Wright designed in 1896. In 1858, the city was chartered by the Illinois General Assembly. The city was incorporated in 1859.
