History of Franklin (Tennesee)
Franklin is a city in, and the county seat of, Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. named after Benjamin Franklin, it is located about 21mi south of downtown Nashville near the interchange of Interstate 65 and Interstate 840. It is one of the principal cities of the Nashville metropolitan area and Middle Tennessee.
As of 2019, its estimated population was 83,097, and it is the seventhlargest city in Tennessee. Franklin is the hometown of two private universities, Belmont University and O’More College of Design.
The city of Franklin was founded October 26, 1799, by Abram Maury, Jr. (1766–1825). Maury named the city after national founding father Benjamin Franklin. Ewen Cameron built the first log cabin on the site of modernday downtown Franklin. Cameron was born February 23, 1768, in Warner, New Hampshire, to Scottish parents. He married Hattie Burton on October 21, 1788, in Lost Nation, Ohio. Cameron arrived in Middle Tennessee in 1794 and builtΓÇï Fort Blount in 1795. He served as a colonel in the Tennessee militia when Tennessee was admitted to the union in 1796 and was a surveyor for Williamson County. He built his log cabin at the confluence of the Beaverdam Creek and the Harpeth River. The City of Franklin was created by an act of the Tennessee General Assembly on October 26, 1799. It was the county seat of Williamson County and was governed by four trusties and a court. The town’s name came from Benjamin Franklin.
During the American Civil War, the Battle of Franklin was fought in the city on November 30, 1864. Fortyfour buildings were converted into a Union hospital. The Carter, Carnton, and McKissick families were prominent in the city’s business and religious communities during the war. The Main Street Methodist Church was used as a hospital, both Confederate and Union soldiers alike were treated in its care. Over ������������������������������������������������������������������������ 1,800 men were treated in the church during its time as a hospital. Three hundred of those men died and were buried in mass graves in the church’s cemetery. The church is now part of the historic district of Franklin and still operates today.
The Cool Springs Galleria opened in 1991, followed by other major shopping centers including The Streets of Indian Lake and Cascade Valley in the 2000s. In 2012, Historic Downtown Franklin was ranked #1 by TripAdvisor in their Top 10 Destinations on the Rise.
