History of Fort Valley
Situated in the southern part of Georgia is the city of Fort Valley. It is the county seat of Peach County and was originally founded as a fort in the early 19th century. The city gets its name from the fort that was built there, which was named after a valle located in Virginia.
The area where Fort Valley is situated was long inhabited by Native Americans before European settlers arrived. It was a strategic location for the Creek Indians since it was situated on a high hill that overlooked the Ocmulgee River.
The first European settlers in the area were a group of families from South Carolina who arrived in 1821. They settled near the Creek Indian village of Ivitachuco and established a trading post. The following year, a fort was built nearby and was named Fort Lackaway.
In 1825, the Creek Indians ceded their land to the United States government and the fort was renamed Fort Hawkins. It became a thriving community with a population of over 1000 by 1828.
When the Second Seminole War broke out in 1835, the fort was abandoned. It was later used as a base by both the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War.
After the war, the fort was decommissioned and the land was sold off. The city of Fort Valley was incorporated in 1873.
The 20th century saw a period of growth for the city with the establishment of several businesses and industries. The Fort Valley State University was also founded in the city in 1895.
